School Choice Meeting 2012

  • Artisan Church
  • 1235 Clinton Ave South, Rochester, NY 14620
  • Tuesday, January 24, 2012
  • 7:00pm until 9:00pm

We love our neighborhood…but what about the schools? What are our options for City schools, charter schools and private schools? Where do parents in our neighborhood send their kids to school and are they happy with the choice they made? What is the enrollment process and where do I start?

If you’re asking yourself any of these questions, please join us for a conversation and informational meeting about school choice at both the elementary and secondary level. Meet students, parents, teachers, and administrators from a range of school options for families in the Highland Park and other southeast city neighborhoods. Our goal is to support families in navigating through the selection process, the opportunities and the choices! We encourage parents to come even if school is a few years down the road…

Two Chances To Tour The Park on Saturday

October 11, 2011
by

Saturday October 15th  is special day for anyone looking to tour the Arboretum in Highland Botanical Park.   That’s because you get two chances courtesy of the Highland Park Conservancy and the Highland Park Neighborhood.

Park and Picnic GroveFirst up, at 9:30 am, Kent Millham, Horticulturist with the Monroe County Parks Department and expert on Highland Park trees, will lead a free tour to show off the park’s trees shining in their fall colors.  Meet in front of the Lamberton Conservatory.  This tour is sponsored by the Highland Conservancy .   Kent is not only an expert but he serves as the latest designer in the position once occupied by John Dunbar who created the Pinetum and planted the first lilacs in the park.  Kent also designs the annual pansy bed display, among other things.  (By the way, if you check the conservancy’s website you will see that it is not too early to reserve a spot on your calendar for their wonderful annual Holiday Party in Lamberton Conservatory.)

At 1:00 pm on the same day, The HPNA’s Series of Tours called Beyond the Lilacs resume with Amy Priestley leading another family friendly walk through “Autumn in Our Highlands”.    Amy’s expansive knowledge of both horticulture and forestry is one reason that we are seeing repeat visitors on these tours of the park.  But people also  attend  because it is just fun to visit the trails of Highland Park, both secret and well-known, with friends, neighbors and a guide that is so willing to share so much knowledge on the beautiful park next door.   Our Tours are free.  Attendees should meet at the Log Bench outside Lamberton Conservatory at 171 Reservoir Avenue at 1 pm. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes. Children always welcome.

Alert About Recent Robberies in our Area

September 21, 2011

The Rochester Police Department has recently published a Crime Prevention Bulletin warning of a pattern of robberies that have been occurring in and around the Highland Park Neighborhood.  We encourage all our neighbors to take a look at the bulletin and to heed the recommended precautions:

  • Keep your property well lit
  • Do not carry excess cash or property
  • Stay alert to your surroundings
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity.  No harm is done if you are wrong, but if you are right you may help prevent a crime.
  • Trust your instincts!  Get away from situations that don’t feel right and call 911.
  • If you do become the victim of a robbery, comply with the criminal’s requests for money or property, don’t make any sudden moves, or do anything to agitate the robber. Try to get a good description of the criminals clothing and physical features. A good witness is the best hope for the police making an arrest.

We will be sure to post any updates from the RPD.

Bike Theft Alert

September 13, 2011
by
There has been a rise in the thefts of bicycles in the South East area.
  • Whenever possible, lock your bike to a permanent fixture.  If you must leave it outdoors, park it in a well-lit area.
  • Use a steel U-shaped lock and cable, lock your bike to a fixed object, such as a bike rack or street sign, and wind a cable through both tires. Make sure that the bike cannot be lifted over the object, such as over a parking meter.
  • Leave as little space as possible within the “U” of the lock to make it harder for thieves to pry it open.
  • Keep the lock off the ground to avoid giving the thief leverage to hammer or smash it.
  • Position the keyhole of the lock so that it faces the ground. This will inhibit the thief’s ability to manipulate the lock.
  • Remove the front wheel and lock both the wheel and the frame together with the U-lock if it’s a quick-release wheel.
  • Take your bike seat with you if it’s easily removable and/or expensive.

The  Highland Park Conservancy presents two related events on the same day this week.  The documentary film “Olmsted and America’s Urban Parks” will be shown Thursday evening, July 21, 2011, at the Highland Park Bowl.  The film was shown last Spring at the Rochester Museum and Science Center to a very large audience, and the reviews were excellent.  The co-sponsors, which include the Monroe County Parks Department, Highland Park Conservancy, Landmark Society of Western New York, Highland Hospital, and the Friends of Seneca Park, invite you to enjoy an evening at the Bowl enjoying a wonderful film.  The show begins at dusk, approximately 8:45pm.

The Highland Park Conservancy has scheduled a History Tour of our own Highland Park to precede the film.  Tim O’Connell, historian and parks advocate, will lead this tour of the 1898 Park.  The tour will start at 7:30pm, and tourists will meet in front of the Conservatory at 180 Reservoir Avenue.  The tour will end at the Bowl, in time for the film. Do join us for this event!
