The Highland Park Neighborhood Association will again be partnering with The Cinema for a free kids movie event!  This has become a yearly tradition for young residents featuring movies  that are destined to become classics.   Movies selected are always fun films appropriate for the entire family.  Join us this Saturday at 1 pm!

The Dome Rebuilt

Our series of Family Friendly Guided Tours of Highland Park co-sponsored by  the Highland Park Neighborhood Association and the  Highland Park Conservancy resume Saturday, January 28, 2012 with our newest  tradition: A  special guided through the Lamberton Conservatory.

Amy Priestley leads this series of tours.  Amy attended graduate school at Oregon State University’s College of Forest Science and her love of all that grows has extended to her business Labor of Love Garden Design & Landscape Artistry.  (If you have had the pleasure to take one of her tours you know they are also a labor of love.)

This is the latest in a yearlong series of tours  that  feature themes and aspects of Highland Park tied to seasonal changes and the variety of the collections.   The tours are generally introductory but repeat attendees will find new content on each guided walk in the series.

Tours are generally free.  However the conservatory does charge a small fee for non-members ($3.00) . Attendees should meet at the Log Bench outside Lamberton Conservatory at 171 Reservoir Avenue at 1 pm on the day of the tour. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes and, for outdoor tours, Clothing Appropriate for the Season.

Children are, of course, welcome.  Our tours, just like our neighborhood, are always appropriate the entire family!

Coming February  18, 2012 - Our Series within a Series that has been covering The Four Seasons of the Historic  Highland Park Pinetum will conclude with “The Pinetum in Winter”.    If winter has returned, come bundled up .  We will supply Hot Chocolate and Mulled Cider for all who join us.

Come celebrate our first National Night Out at Ellwanger & Barry Park (corner of Meigs and Linden) this Tuesday, August 2nd from 5:30-8:30pm. We plan to have information about PACTAC and SCUBA safety programs and games for the kids. We will also have an update on the intersection art project at Linden and Meigs, including the showing of a short and interesting movie, “Transforming Spaces Into Places“.  Light refreshments will be served.  And bring any concerns or questions you have about the Neighborhood and/or our HPNA Association – discussions are encouraged.  See you there!

Book & Mike return for another  Early Evening of  Music in the Park

We’ll provide the music and you bring the picnic.  Or maybe just a chair or blanket.  This Wednesday July 13th at 6:30 pm, the music of Book  &  Mike will fill the air of Ellwanger & Barry Park as our series of Early Evening Concerts returns.   The Highland Park Neighborhood Association is proud to sponsor a concert of folk,  Celtic and classic  pop.   Come and relax and listen to Book & Mike’s vocals and instrumentals on guitar, violin   and penny whistle.

So come and cool off in the shade of Rochester’s Living Museum of Conifers.  Before he started the lilac collection, Starting in 1891, John Dunbar, Park Assistant Superintendent,  had already begun to plant the impressive set of hundreds of varieties of cedars,   cypresses, firs, junipers,  larches, pines, hemlocks,  spruces, and yews.   Meetup in Highland Park at the Log Bench outside Conservatory at 171 Reservoir Avenue.  Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes. If you are attending the Flower & Ice: On The Sport Event, click the Icon to the Right to Download a Map.   This event runs June 25 & July 23 from 10 am to 4 pm.    Look for us under the umbrella in Ellwanger &  Barry Park for a hard copy of the map and to discuss any aspect of this project.

The 2011 HPNA exhibit includes a now and then retrospective on the destructive 1991 Rochester Ice Storm. To add perspective to the dramatic photos, we created shot for shot remakes of some of the photos of the neighborhood and displaying these alongside the 1991 images 

We had so much fun walking the neighborhood and setting up retakes that we came up with an idea for you to join us.  This  summer, we are hosting two “Picture the Neighborhood” days when everyone is invited to take pictures of  The Highland Park Neighborhood…whether it is a photo of a street, the people, pets, businesses, your house, that beautiful garden down the way or our parks (large and small).

During these two days, we are setting up “Flower & Ice: On the Spot”.  At ten locations, we will display a photo taken in 1991 (a map for this exhibit will be available – come to Ellwanger & Barry Park to get a copy or stop back here in a few days). When you tour this unique on-site display, we’d like to see your version of any of these scenes today.  So,  if you take photos at four of our stations and send them to us, you will be eligible for a prize.  And all photos sent to us taken during “Picture the Neighborhood Days” (or any other time for that matter) will be eligible to be part of our upcoming 2012 printed calendar as well as a custom prize

Two Events in One – Two Days to Participate! 

Get out your camera and take a portrait of the Highland Park Neighborhood: Our Streets, People, Businesses, Flora and Special Places.
