Thanks to everyone who participated in the June 22 general meeting, both attendees and presenters. There was a lot of great information shared about home improvement, funding options, and the dangers of lead in our older homes. If you’d like any additional information you can visit the following sites:

Elizabeth McDade of the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning provided a great deal of information. If you are planning on any home improvements or are in the processes of renovating we would strongly encourage you to visit the Coalition’s website and learn about the safety precautions you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Our next general meeting will be held in October. Stay tuned for more information.

June 22 Meeting – Home Improvement

The HPNA is planning its next general meeting for Tuesday, June 22, at 7:00 PM. We will be meeting at the County Parks Building on Reservoir Road, across from the Conservatory. The topic will be ideas, funding, and resources for improving your home. A number of great speakers are lined up:

Jenn Teremy: SEAC Housing Program Director, will discuss grant options for home owners.
Mark Siwiec: Realtor, will discuss improvement options that will add the most value to your home.
Elizabeth McDade: Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning, will talk about lead safety, protecting children, and our older homes.

Feel free to join us at 6:30 to mingle and meet your neighbors. The meeting will officially start at 7:00.

Please Note: The County Parks building has been undergoing renovations. If we are not in the upstairs meeting place, you may need to enter from the back to access the basement meeting room.

March 23 General Meeting – “Placemaking” in Our Park

On March 23, 2010, Our next General Meeting will focus on changes to Our Playground: Ellwanger & Barry Park – The Center of Our Neighborhood. This is your chance to get an overview and to give us feedback. Your Neighborhood Association requests your presence and, especially, your commentary on the plans we will present to you. In cooperation with SEAC, The Highland Park Neighborhood Association received a grant from The Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester for a “Family Friendly” art sculpture within Ellwanger & Barry Park. Craig Wilson, an artist who also designs exhibits at The Strong Museum, was chosen to create the art work and he will present his concept of this important addition to you and your neighbors. In additions, two other initiatives are working their way to fruition, the first includes proposed changes to the park such as additional signage, and adding equipment geared towards older children and adults and, perhaps, some new lighting. The second series of changes are the results our
Traffic Calming Team’s Plan, including a request for raised crosswalks and other several other important changes to the streets around the park area. This includes special artistic treatment in the form of a “street mural” at the intersection of Meigs and Linden.

The volunteers in your neighborhood have been working for months to create these plans to add to the quality of life in our part of the city . But we need your opinion to make it happen. Look for an agenda over the weekend on this site and a more detailed email as well.

Arts and Cultural Team Forming. Feb 3rd Meeting

In cooperation with SEAC, The Highland Park Neighborhood Association has received a generous grant from The Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester for a project that includes commissioning a “Family Friendly” art sculpture within Ellwanger & Barry Park. Craig Wilson, an artist who also designs exhibits at The Strong Museum, has been chosen to create the art work. To oversee this project and pursue similar initiatives, considered other programs (such design a summer concert series) , as well as manage our Lilac Festival events, we are forming a new Highland Park Neighborhood Arts and Cultural Team. School Choice- A Conversation – Meeting on January 27

Join us for a neighborhood conversation and informational meeting on the topic of school choice!

Wednesday, January 27
6:30 – 7:00 pm Refreshments, mingling & information tables

We will have resource tables including information about elementary and secondary school choice options, and the Rochester City School District’s student placement office will be available from 6:30-7:30pm to assist you with registration.

The agenda will include an interactive discussion, a panel of parents and students who will share their experiences with school options in the city, and a “speak out” session that will give all participants a chance to share their thoughts and concerns. City officials, RCSD School Board members, and school representatives have been invited to participate in the discussion and answer your questions.

Traffic Calming – Report from a New Team

Linden Sidewalk During Taste of The Neighborhood Event

As a result of the September 2009 General Meeting on Safety and Security, a group of neighbors came together to form a Traffic Calming Team. Our first areas of focus: Linden and Meigs Streets around Ellwanger and Barry Park and also Goodman Street. The playground is so popular with young families that it can be viewed as “The Heart of the Neighborhood”. So when the team created its first list of priorities, ensuring the safety of children going to and from this park got the top rank. Right behind on the list is the task of researching and working with the City on ways to create safer crossings on Goodman Street. But while discussing these hot-spots, we realized that our initiative needed an even broader focus towards building a modern culture of respect for pedestrian and non-vehicular transportation within our neighborhood, the surrounding area and the city at large.

2009 A Year in Review and a Thank You

At our recent Annual meeting and celebration, the Highland Park Neigborhood Association shared two presentations, the first was a 2009 year-in-review month by month list of our events, exhibits and other activities. The second was a simple Thank You to all our volunteers, friends and supporters. Both of these presentations are now on-line over at our Virtual Scrapbook site along with a reprised link to our Youtube videos shot at the Taste of the Neighborhood event.

If while examing the presentations, you find that we did not mention a volunteer, please let us know and we will add his or her name to our list.
