Help make Our Neighborhood Sparkle: Clean Sweep 2010 May 22

In 2010, the Clean Sweep program will pick up where it left off after a successful 2009 and continue to clean up the area while building community spirit. Come and join in on the fun on this Saturday: Projects include Planters for South Clinton, Cleaning Ellwanger & Barry Park and projects in other gardens and locations in this part of the Flower City.

Clean Sweep 2010 for the Southeast Quadrant- starts May 22nd at Cobb’s Hill Park, Culver Rd. and Norris Dr.

Saturday Clean Sweeps begin at 8:30 a.m. where volunteers arrive to free coffee and donuts. They’re given a free t-shirt, assigned to a team and hit the streeets by 9 a.m. Tools are provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own. They return to the staging ground at 1 p.m. for a picnic to build on the community spirit that is the most lasting benefit of Clean Sweep.

More than 19,000 volunteers have demonstrated their pride in Rochester by working alongside City crews to clean and beautify just about every street in the city. In addition to removing litter and debris, volunteers do such things as planting flowers, pruning trees and performing other neighborhood beautification projects. In 2009, the Northeast Quadrant cleanup drew nearly 1,200 volunteers who collected more than 25 tons of litter and debris from the neighborhood. That brought the total debris collection for 2009′s Clean Sweeps to more than 100 tons. With your help, we can make 2010 surpass the impressive goals set in 2009.

After School in the Park! A new City of Rochester Program

“After School in the Park”.

Located at Lake Riley Lodge at Cobbs Hill Park (100 Norris Drive), This is a new and innovative after school program.
Activities include:

Lego robotics
Homework help
Digital photography and video
Entrepreneurship education
Double-dutch
Field trips
Video games
Internet access
Board games
and more!

Youth do have a say regarding what activities are included in the program. The program itself runs Monday through Friday from dismissal until 6:30 in the evening. Healthy snack and dinner are served every day. Currently drop-off must be arranged through the school or by parents.The program price is $55 a week per youth and must be paid prior to the week of attendance.Please feel free to copy this brochure and hand it out to anyone that you feel would be interested. Bring the family to help kick-off the holiday season at the Sibley Building!

Visit Santa in his original Midtown Chair; enjoy holiday music by School 17 and East High School, children’s activities, facepainting, Rudolph and Friends and Prime Time Brass holiday tunes. Join Mayor Duffy and holiday characters as they head outdoors to light-up the Liberty Pole for the holiday season. Then join Mayor Duffy, Prime Time Brass, holiday characters and others in a festive family holiday parade to Manhattan Square Park Ice Rink! Hop on a ol’ time trolley, take a horse-drawn wagon or walk in this parade!

Kick off this season opening celebration with a ground fireworks display at 5:30 pm. Enjoy entertainment and skate to DJ music by Beal’s Rock and Roll Review, FREE open skate until 8:30 p.m. (limited skate rental is $3 per person), meet and greet with Santa and holiday characters, figure skating and speed skating exhibitions, 30 foot, fully-decorated holiday tree reflected in the rink, FREE horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the evening (until 8:30 p.m.) and catch a ride back to your parking garage on the ol’ time trolley (until 9 p.m.).

Registration begins at 8:30 AM, followed by the keynote speaker and round table discussion. There will be morning and afternoon guided tours of some of Sector 6′s greatest assets: Genesee Valley Park, Highland Park, Genesee River (by canoe), Erie Canal Towpath (by bike, please bring your own), U of R Arboretum, Mt. Hope Cemetery, community gardens, a solar powered home, and a LEED certified building.

Transportation to and from the tours will be provided.
Enjoy lunch, courtesy of the University of Rochester, featuring food from a variety of local restaurants.
Visit the exhibition tables and discuss sustainability with experts from various green organizations.

South East Family Health Fair – Saturday, August 22

The 4th Annual City of Rochester sponsored Health Fair to be located at James Monroe High School at 164 Alexander Street and Monroe Avenue from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. There will be fun activities for the whole family. It provides the opportunity for families to interact with 60+ health vendors. The Office of Mental Health Promotion will be attending this fair along with Aging Well Initiatives. A Mental Health Promotion Basket will be raffled off at this event.
