Blossoms, Business and The City of Flowers – Now on Display

The Highland Park Neighborhood Association is pleased to announce its latest exhibit, “Blossoms, Business and The City of Flowers” is now on display at Muddy Waters Coffee House at 752 S Goodman Street in Rochester. The exhibit highlights the era when Rochester, New York earned its famous nickname as “The Flower City”. From the mid 19^th through early 20^th centuries, Rochester was the center of the Plant Nursery and Seed industries and became known around the world when companies such as Ellwanger & Barry’s Mount Hope Nurseries shipped nursery stock to every habitable continent. Lesser known is that the City also became an image center hosting many Lithographic and Publishing Companies which specialized in colorful and beautiful depictions of plants, flowers, trees, fruits and berries. The panels on display here attempt to recapture some of that long ago Botanical glory during the 75 year period when Rochester was not only one of America’s fastest growing cities, but also may have been one of its “greenest”. Much of the source material for these displays is what were called “Plates for Nurserymen” created by immigrant artists. These plates were collected in vast catalogs of individual botanical colored lithographs ( i.e: chromolithographs) that Rochester printing companies kept in stock so that they could create custom bound catalogs for individual salesmen representing a plant nursery. Other illustrations are from 19^th Seed Catalogs, Trade Cards and art created for early 20^th Century Seed Packets. Also included are lithographs from a variety of James Vick’s publications, many designed specifically as beautiful front pieces and keepsakes Reproductions of many of the posters on display are available with all profit going to Highland Park Neighborhood’s cultural initiatives

As an addition, there are also a few contemporary photos inspired while researching the exhibit. Finally, this show also features 8 stunning Black & White Canvases that represent a preview of an upcoming show that will revisit the 1991 Ice Storm . These photos were taken throughout the Highland Park Neighborhood by resident Matt Carnevale.

The opening night party is Friday March 12th at 7- 9 pm. The exhibit will remain on display until the first week in May when it will move to the Lower Reservoir Gatehouse in Highland Park.

If you saw our year end wrap-up at our annual meeting, you’ll understand that we have events, meetings and many other projects going on in our neighborhood all year long, every month of the year. Movies, Gardening, Traffic Calming, Planning, Cleanup Crews, Arts, Exhibit Volunteers, Taste of the Neighborhood, Halloween Parade, Tours, School Choice…etc… (New this year ! Garage Sale!) and the list continues.

Many of you would like to participate but just don’t feel as if you can commit to being on one of our teams or committees or our board. Of course, joining as a supporting member is a BIG HELP. Contributions from our neighbors help us with each and every one of our programs.

But we have come up with another way you can help… we call it:

The Three Hour Team

It is very simple to become a member of the Three Hour Team

Email us with your contact information (at jointheteam@highlandparkrochester.org), include your phone number and name and tell us you want to join the team. If you have a list of thing you would prefer doing and those that you wouldn’t, include this list.
Next time we have a task, such as helping plant or cleanup a park or garden or deliver our Buzz or something guaranteed to take 3 hours or less, we will contact you and see if you are available.
The first time you say YES! and join us, that will be it….we won’t call again UNLESS YOU JOIN THE TEAM AGAIN. Or a New Year begins.

And of course, we are hoping you will join us again and again all year long. But if one three hour session per year is all you can afford….we will still be grateful and acknowledge your volunteer contributions at the next annual meeting (which by the way, we are already planning and it is going to be special from what I’ve heard)

Feb 24th – Highland Park Conservancy Meeting

The Highland Park Conservancy announces its Annual Membership Meeting

WHEN: Wednesday, February 24, 2010
TIME: 7:00 PM
WHERE: Monroe County Parks Administration Office
171 Reservoir Avenue, Rochester

The Agenda includes:

• Election of Directors
• Report on Conservancy Activities during 2009
• Update on our new Website
• Description of upcoming tours and events
• Discussion of the Reservoir Lining Project by a Representative from the City Water Bureau

Membership levels range from $10 for student/senior, $20 for individual, $25 family, $50 for special friend, and $100 for contributor.

You do need not be members to attend the meeting. The conservancy welcomes anyone and everyone who is interested.

Light refreshments will be available.

Saturday Morning at the Cinema: Family Movie on March 6th

The Highland Park Neighborhood Association and The Cinema Theater are sponsoring another Saturday at the Cinema Event. This has become a yearly tradition for young residents featuring movies that are destined to become classics. Movies selected are always fun films appropriate for the entire family.

The second movie this year is on:

The movie to be shown is: BOLT A 2008 Disney Academy Award Nominee

Theater Concessions will be open. That includes the best popcorn in town.

Arts and Cultural Team Forming. Feb 3rd Meeting

In cooperation with SEAC, The Highland Park Neighborhood Association has received a generous grant from The Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester for a project that includes commissioning a “Family Friendly” art sculpture within Ellwanger & Barry Park. Craig Wilson, an artist who also designs exhibits at The Strong Museum, has been chosen to create the art work. To oversee this project and pursue similar initiatives, considered other programs (such design a summer concert series) , as well as manage our Lilac Festival events, we are forming a new Highland Park Neighborhood Arts and Cultural Team. This team will have an organizational meeting on February 3, 2010 at 6:30 pm Call Michael Tomb at 473-0026 or email us at arts@highlandparkrochester.org if you are interested in joining the team.

Last Week’s PAC-TAC Walk Rescheduled for Wed Feb 3rd

Because of the weather and a meeting on Security (See this page) , the PAC-TAC walk with Pizza scheduled last week was moved to Wednesday Feb 3 from 6:30 to 8:30. We meet at the NSC (Net) office on S. Clinton Ave. The next few dates after that are the fourth Wednesday of the Month:

School Governance Meetings Postponed.

Peace Church has Yoga Monday and Friday mornings at 9am and Wednesday evenings at 5:30. Hour long session for all fitness levels lead by certified Yoga instructor Amanda Jacobs. We put out a basket all donations help with paying for the roof! If you have questions give us a call at 244-9206
