Arts and Cultural Team Forming. Feb 3rd Meeting

In cooperation with SEAC, The Highland Park Neighborhood Association has received a generous grant from The Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester for a project that includes commissioning a “Family Friendly” art sculpture within Ellwanger & Barry Park. Craig Wilson, an artist who also designs exhibits at The Strong Museum, has been chosen to create the art work. To oversee this project and pursue similar initiatives, considered other programs (such design a summer concert series) , as well as manage our Lilac Festival events, we are forming a new Highland Park Neighborhood Arts and Cultural Team. This team will have an organizational meeting on February 3, 2010 at 6:30 pm Call Michael Tomb at 473-0026 or email us at arts@highlandparkrochester.org if you are interested in joining the team.

Last Week’s PAC-TAC Walk Rescheduled for Wed Feb 3rd

Because of the weather and a meeting on Security (See this page) , the PAC-TAC walk with Pizza scheduled last week was moved to Wednesday Feb 3 from 6:30 to 8:30. We meet at the NSC (Net) office on S. Clinton Ave. The next few dates after that are the fourth Wednesday of the Month:

School Governance Meetings Postponed.

The City of Rochester has postponed the Voice of the Customer meeting on School Governance Reform that was scheduled for Thursday February 4 at 6 – 8 p.m at the : School of the Arts , 45 Prince Street

Pay What You Want Yoga

Peace Church has Yoga Monday and Friday mornings at 9am and Wednesday evenings at 5:30. Hour long session for all fitness levels lead by certified Yoga instructor Amanda Jacobs. We put out a basket all donations help with paying for the roof! If you have questions give us a call at 244-9206

School Choice- A Conversation – Meeting on January 27

Join us for a neighborhood conversation and informational meeting on the topic of school choice!

Wednesday, January 27

We will have resource tables including information about elementary and secondary school choice options, and the Rochester City School District’s student placement office will be available from 6:30-7:30pm to assist you with registration.

The agenda will include an interactive discussion, a panel of parents and students who will share their experiences with school options in the city, and a “speak out” session that will give all participants a chance to share their thoughts and concerns. City officials, RCSD School Board members, and school representatives have been invited to participate in the discussion and answer your questions.

The Buzz , the first of 2010, is ready to be downloaded on the right. And soon, if you live in the Neighborhood, it will also be delivered to your door. This is the third issue designed by Neighborhood Resident Joe Allard and we feel fortunate that a professional like Joe is willing to donate his services towards our Neighborhood Newsletter.

If you are interested in helping us deliver this issue, please contact us ASAP at comments@highlandparkrochester.org And as you read through this issue, if you feel inspired (and Joe’s work does that to people) write to us with comments and story ideas ( or just say hi! ) at buzz@highlandparkrochester.org . In fact, if you don’t have an idea to share just yet, here are two to get you going:

1) What does Ellwanger & Barry Park mean to you? Next issue will feature a section with neighbor’s answers to that question…let one of those be yours. **

2) Send us your best photo of the Lilac Festival and it might be printed in full color in our next issue. In fact, Joe is going to pick out his choice as the best photo he received and the submitter will get a special prize! **

(By the way, you may notice that some delivered copies were paginated incorrectly due to a printing error that would have been too expensive to change…and then again, maybe you won’t notice. One of the nice aspects of Joe’s design is that every page looks good no matter what !!)

United States Census 2010 – Temporary Positions Available

The United States Census 2010 :”It’s in Our Hands”

The Census Department is staffing up to hire Census takers to support the Census 2010. These temporary positions will start in late March 2010 and end in August 2010.

Census takers work in their communities locating households to explain the purpose of the census, conduct personal interviews with respondents who failed to return their 2010 Census questionnaire, and record their responses on paper forms. In most cases, a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle are required to work as a census taker.

Each applicant must take a 30 minute basic skills test consisting of 28 multiple choice uestions measuring knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a variety of census jobs.

Census taker schedules typically include 20 to 40 hours of work per week. You must be available to work when people are usually home, such as in the evening and on weekends.

January 28th Pac-Tac Walk and other dates for 2010

Happy New Year Neighbors,

Hope you all had a great holiday season. With 2010 upon us it gives us a chance to look back at 2009. I’d like to thank all of you that walked PAC TAC either on your own or with us for one of our HPNA group walks. My goal for 2010 is to gather a pool of HPNA PAC TACers that could saturate an area if we were seeing a crime pattern. Four or five nights of us walking might be enough to drive the criminals off to a less attentive neighborhood.

We also had a very successful safety and security meeting in September. We identified some key issues in the neighborhood, including speeding concerns, the need for more crosswalks and safety concerns around Ellwanger Barry Park. We have since formed a traffic safety committee and several of us have been trained on the speed watch program. We have met with and are continuing to meet with city and NSC office officials regarding these matters.

Our Park Ave walk was a success. The monthly walks start back up on Thursday January 28th from 6:30 to 8:30. (Because of the General Meeting on Wednesday the 27th, we are moving the first Pac-Tac walk to the following Thursday) We meet at the NSC (Net) office on S. Conservatory Moss

Saturday January 23, 2010 is a special edition of the Neighborhood’s year -long Guided Series Tours of Highland Park . This one is inside the famous Lamberton Conservatory. Our guide, Amy invites you and the whole family to come along. And as I have found, the kids will love it! Please note that unless you have already purchased a conservatory membership, there will be a fee of $3 to take this tour. (Our outside tours are always free)

All Tours start at 1 PM at Lamberton Conservatory in Highland Park…Look for the sign to the right….And then go inside.

Tours continue all through out 2010, usually on the third Saturday of every month…Details will be posted on this blog.
