It’s back! The Highland Park Neighborhood Association will again be partnering with The Cinema for a free kids movie event!  This has become a yearly tradition for young residents featuring movies  that are destined to become classics.   Movies selected are always fun films appropriate for the entire family.  Join us this Saturday at 1 pm!

The Dome Rebuilt

Our series of Family Friendly Guided Tours of Highland Park co-sponsored by  the Highland Park Neighborhood Association and the  Highland Park Conservancy resume Saturday, January 28, 2012 with our newest  tradition: A  special guided through the Lamberton Conservatory.

Amy Priestley leads this series of tours.  Amy attended graduate school at Oregon State University’s College of Forest Science and her love of all that grows has extended to her business Labor of Love Garden Design & Landscape Artistry.  (If you have had the pleasure to take one of her tours you know they are also a labor of love.)

This is the latest in a yearlong series of tours  that  feature themes and aspects of Highland Park tied to seasonal changes and the variety of the collections.   The tours are generally introductory but repeat attendees will find new content on each guided walk in the series.

Tours are generally free.  However the conservatory does charge a small fee for non-members ($3.00) . Attendees should meet at the Log Bench outside Lamberton Conservatory at 171 Reservoir Avenue at 1 pm on the day of the tour. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes and, for outdoor tours, Clothing Appropriate for the Season.

Children are, of course, welcome.  Our tours, just like our neighborhood, are always appropriate the entire family!

Coming February  18, 2012 - Our Series within a Series that has been covering The Four Seasons of the Historic  Highland Park Pinetum will conclude with “The Pinetum in Winter”.    If winter has returned, come bundled up .  We will supply Hot Chocolate and Mulled Cider for all who join us.

First up, at 9:30 am, Kent Millham, Horticulturist with the Monroe County Parks Department and expert on Highland Park trees, will lead a free tour to show off the park’s trees shining in their fall colors.  Meet in front of the Lamberton Conservatory.  This tour is sponsored by the Highland Conservancy .   Kent is not only an expert but he serves as the latest designer in the position once occupied by John Dunbar who created the Pinetum and planted the first lilacs in the park.  Kent also designs the annual pansy bed display, among other things.  (By the way, if you check the conservancy’s website you will see that it is not too early to reserve a spot on your calendar for their wonderful annual Holiday Party in Lamberton Conservatory.)

At 1:00 pm on the same day, The HPNA’s Series of Tours called Beyond the Lilacs resume with Amy Priestley leading another family friendly walk through “Autumn in Our Highlands”.    Amy’s expansive knowledge of both horticulture and forestry is one reason that we are seeing repeat visitors on these tours of the park.  But people also  attend  because it is just fun to visit the trails of Highland Park, both secret and well-known, with friends, neighbors and a guide that is so willing to share so much knowledge on the beautiful park next door.   Our Tours are free.  Attendees should meet at the Log Bench outside Lamberton Conservatory at 171 Reservoir Avenue at 1 pm. • Keep your property well lit
• Do not carry excess cash or property
• Stay alert to your surroundings
• Immediately report any suspicious activity.  No harm is done if you are wrong, but if you are right you may help prevent a crime.
• Trust your instincts!  Get away from situations that don’t feel right and call 911.
• If you do become the victim of a robbery, comply with the criminal’s requests for money or property, don’t make any sudden moves, or do anything to agitate the robber. Try to get a good description of the criminals clothing and physical features. A good witness is the best hope for the police making an arrest.
