Site Guide
This site uses a simple blog format . The following are instructions for finding and filtering the information that you are looking for.
If you are unfamiliar with blogs, then you should think of this site as being sort of an online version of a diary, where the daily entries are details about events or other news items.
The first thing to learn or to remember when on the Home Page (See link at top right) is to scroll down through all the latest “posts” (or “entries”…these terms are interchangeable). The list of latest posts about events and news gets quite lengthy. So the current set of posts is bigger than any one screen will show. At first, the entries are shown in the order in which they were composed. So events are not always listed in order. (We do attempt to change this order so that all upcoming events are listed before those that have already occurred. ) Here are some other tips to make this site easier to use:
- The wide left column contains the complete text of the last twenty entries (also called posts), that is why we recommend above that you remember to scroll down through them as if they were separate articles in a newspaper that you might read.
- Clicking on the Title Line of any article will open it up as its own page. If there are comments or discussions on posted entries, you will see them on this page
- Use the SEARCH function at near right to generate a list of entries that contain a Keyword or Search term of your choice.
- You may use the TOPIC INDEX drop down box at right to select a Index Category. When you do this, you will get a list of blog entries and events write-ups that were indexed within the category as they were added to this site. We try to maintain a list of useful categories that are tailored to the Highland Park Neighborhood, nearby Neighborhoods, City Events and local churches and other Institutions.
You can use your browser bookmark feature to Save customized “Filtered” version of the Posts here. For example, choose the City of Rochester Events topic and when this page comes up….just bookmark it! Or, as another example, use search function for the word Music…and then bookmark this page when the result is shown
- Next in the column at right, the NEIGHBORHOOD LINKS section will take you other pages and listings maintained by the Highland Park Neighborhood Association such as our main site’s home page and our Virtual Scrapbook site. Also in this section are a couple of predefined Topic Search Links (for example Neighborhood Events which is the list of events created by the Association for Neighborhood Residents)
- The MOST RECENT POSTS section further down on the right displays titles of the last ten entries added to the blog and clicking on any of those titles will take you to an individual page (suitable for printing)
- LAST EMAIL (HIGHLAND BLASTS) is the next section down the right column. This is a small window to the last three posts of the The Highland Blast email newsletter. (This is done using what is called an RSS feed )
- Below that are the MONTH BY MONTH ARCHIVES section which are links to Blog Entries arranged according to the month and that each was added here (not the date of the event) You may find that the TOPIC INDEX categories (mentioned above) serves as a more useful index to different topics.
- Next comes a sign-up box marked EMAIL ME THE NEWS ! If you want to receive an email with a link to newly posted entries on this blog by e-mail, then this new and exciting feature is for you!
- If you know whate RSS is and how to use it (and even if you don’t you might still find it useful), the next section on the lower right contains links to two RSS feeds suported here. The first one is the most useful: a feed for new posts and the second is for comments (I’ll let you find that one with out pointing to it)
- At top right, to the left of a link to this Site Guide, is a link to our Newsletter & Email archive. Go here to find down-loadable copies of the latest (and earlier) BUZZ printed newsletters. That page also contains links to our the latest versions of our E-mail newsletters. The Highland Blast and the Highland Park Security Bulletins.
- Comments and Replies are allowed on most pages. However, the first time you make a comment, your account and comment must be approved by a moderator. This is only to avoid spamming programs and other types of nuisances from leaving comment on the site. After that first comment is approved, you will free to add others. Note: the moderators reserve the right to remove any post that is offensive , a personal attack or inappropriate for any reason according to their own judgement.
